The View from my Windshield
Wednesday is a special day of the week for me, it is Wake up Wednesday at my World Market. Otherwise known as the “day I feed my coffee addiction.” For those who don’t know what Wake up Wednesday is: you get double punches on your virtual coffee card. So for every 3 bags of coffee I buy I get one free. Best day of the week to buy coffee so I had to go get my Vanilla Bean coffee for the next week. Mommy needs her wake up juice in the morning!
As I was turning into the shopping area there is a stop sign. I stopped and straight ahead of me I saw a man crossing the road. He looked very sick. He had one of those canes with four prongs that he was leaning heavily on to make it across. He was completely bald, had on shorts and a backpack on. All of a sudden he started to look behind him, spun around and fell flat on his back. I was in shock to say the least. As he laid there on his back he lifted his hands as if it say “why?” and just stayed there, right in the middle of a 4 lane intersection.
He couldn’t get up.
I was about to leap from my car, but there was no need. Two men stopped and got out to help him up. I sat still in my car and watched as they gingerly walked him across the street.
It affected me for the rest of the day. I feel deeply sad for the man who fell. I just can’t imagine how humiliating it would be to fall right in the road in front of everyone and not be able to get up on my own. He looked so sad and frustrated. I just wanted to make him feel better. I hope he knows Jesus. I hope he knows the Gospel.
In the midst of this feeling of deep sadness, I was encouraged to see two men jump to action. In a world where we have horrific stories like the Tuscon killings, I witnessed first hand the kindness of strangers. Yes, there is evil in the world but good coexists here with it. How encouraging to see goodness in action.
That was not what I was expected on my weekly pilgrimage to World Market, but it certainly have an impact!
